Architecture
What I found most interesting about this last class was our discussion about architecture and how the structure of certain buildings and houses have their own unique style, but seems blend in with what its geographical location is.
I had a difficult time understanding the differences between modern and post-modern. To be honest, it is not my area of expertise. I feel like I have seen so many different structures that I do not question whether or not it is modern or post-modern, but just wonder with fascination on how people build such structures at such a large scale.
After reading and discussing modernity and postmodernity I started to look back at all the structures (big or small) I have seen in person and was trying to separate what would be classified as a modern structure or a postmodern structure. Looking back at the structures I have seen, it was easy to distinguish what was modern and what was postmodern.
One structure I questioned was the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. It might have been easy to others to tell if it was modern or postmodern, but the question I asked myself was it modern because it was used as a radio tower or postmodern because the time they made it, it was seen as art and a different shape from most other structures in France?
I did some research online and most sources say it was postmodern because of its shape and unique style compared to other structures in the country and in the world. I would say it would be a postmodern look, but because of the discussions I have seen online about what category it should fall under I am not 100% confident in my answer anymore. I think it would be kind of cool if we were to go through pictures of architecture and had a game to see if it was modern or post modern. So far its the one thing I almost am able to fully understand in this class and the readings. I am looking forward to try and understand more on this subject and expand to see how it connects with other things in class.
