Disharmonious Harmony

Disharmonious Harmony is the concept that I could better understand through my own experiences. It means its name exactly; mess that somehow comes together and works out to form something.
This post-modern characteristic strips our "traditional" definition of harmony into a "difficult whole".

I found it mind-blowing how harmony can be transformed into something not necessarily perfect. Disharmonious Harmony enhances complexity and embraces evolution and dynamism. It is a paradox that might not always result in visual pleasure, but I think it has the power of appealing to broad multitudes.

As I read and we discussed in class, I was able to relate this concept back to many forms of art I have encountered during my world travels. First to come to mind were the many graffiti walls in the famous "Beco do Batman" in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This place is full of post-modern art creations on top of concrete and brick walls that form an iconic graffiti-only neighborhood.

I thought this wall was a perfect 2-D example of disharmonious harmony. This piece is messy, yet weirdly organized and in my opinion, pleasing. There is no constructed pattern, but the lines themselves seem to naturally fall into place because of the lack of structure. What I liked the most about this wall is its movement. It is definitely not a static or perfectly polished piece, it rather exudes endless movement.

This place is full of similar works that push "tradition" towards unexpected directions. I am almost certain you can find a graffiti that exemplifies every post-modern characteristic we have studied here. In addition to art, the city of Sao Paulo is home to astonishing architecture. The booming city is home to thousands of established and emerging architects and artists that are transforming it into an art capital. I highly recommend this destination :)
