The past two classes were quite interesting because of Habermas and his belief on modernity being an incomplete project. From my understanding is that we have moved on to post modernity in a very quick sense and seem to have almost everything around us labeled as postmodern. Habermas gives the impression, to me at least, that modernity is not yet to be over. I find it very strange way to look at modernity and post modernity in the way that Habermas looks at it.
For some reason whenever I think of the word postmodern I think “future.” Anything that has a post modern look is giving a futuristic look. Something that we do not normally see in society today as traditional. Whenever I think of modern, I think of the structures and architecture that we have today in the present time, but then again modern can mean something different to someone of a different time frame. Modern to me is whatever we define as something traditional in the present time frame. I write this very carefully trying not to use the word “normal.” I learned that in Resisting Normalcy class, that normal would not be appropriate word to utilize while describing physical bodies or architecture. I do my best to adapt to the classroom setting and use terminology to respect everyone and make sure that I am correct with what I say when it comes to speaking of the specific topic we are focusing on.
I find it immensely difficult to follow the readings in class as well as the discussions we have in the classroom because of the various theories that these people present and share with us. I think it is because of my military background that I am used to being told a clear and concise answer where as in a liberal arts school you are taught to think freely and choose what you want to believe.
