After reading and our discussion about Mark Posters Postmodern Vitalities, it got me thinking about the film, Ready Player One.  Throughout the reading, I was making constant connections to the film.  The films setting is in Columbus Ohio, year 2045.  The entire world now spends their free time in a virtual world called The Oasis.  An interesting name to use, mainly because it implies that it is a place to escape to.  This reminded me of when Mark Poster stated that “Virtual realities are fanciful imaginings that, in their difference from real reality, evoke play and discovery, instituting a new level of imagination… placing the individual ‘inside’ alternative worlds.” (446).  Ready player ones “Oasis” had me thinking of how it would affect the real world as opposed to the virtual.  Even though the films conflict occurs within the “Oasis.”  But I was trying to find out how the outside world would work with a technology engrained that deeply within to its culture.
Personally, I think it would take away from real culture, and we would see an explosion of cultures and subcultures forming within the virtual world.  Art within the virtual world would make real art seem dull and boring.  I think these “alternative worlds” Poster is speaking about are going to be art within themselves, they are created to be explored, and experienced.  A new age of art could bring a demise to the old age of art, or the art that exists within the real world.  I think art is a pillar of culture, so with the loss of the real-world art, I think we might be losing a crucial part of our culture.  Although that is a negative point of view for the future, I think it may happen and it will be an interesting time to live in.
