Blog Post 10/7

Unfortunately, I was only able to make it to one of the classes this week but the discussions we had in class had me thinking about new things.  In CMC 100 we briefly went over the advertising tactics used by Disney to target the parents of children.  But looking at Disney with a critical lens in this depth had me interested.  Growing up I loved Disney world, every time I went it felt like stepping into a world greater than the one I live in.  When I was there I experienced a feeling of fulfillment, like all my childhood dreams come true.  But that would always leave me with an empty feeling after.  Realizing that the world around me is boring.  In the article “The City of Robots” by Umberto Eco he states that “Disneyland tells us that technology can give us more reality than nature can.”  I think our reality will always be our reality, it’s just that when presented with a more perfect one, we tend to reject the one we live in.   What makes me think is what may be coming in the near future.
With groundbreaking advancements with virtual and augmented reality, I soon think that the reality we soon see every day will be filtered.  We may become so accustomed to the idea of a better world, that we actively disguise our own reality with a one more bearable.   This world or reality is only accessible with technology, like the way Disney uses it, they will “Tell us that technology can give us more reality than nature can.” Technology, in the past has always been exploited for capital gain.  What does that mean when the technology controls a part of our reality.  I think that opens whole new doors to ethical questions that we have not even though to ask yet.
