For my post-blog entre I thought it would be interesting to focus on the concept of "reality" and what that really means. Here are a few quotes from last week that made me think about perception and reality.
“Does
reality actually outstrip fiction” (C 228).
“Disneyland
exists in order to hide the fact that it is the real country…Disneyland is
presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real” (Baudrillard, 393)
Successive
phases of the image:
-
Reflects
reality (good)
-
Masks
and denatures reality (evil)
-
Masks
the absence of reality (sorcery)
-
No
relation to reality—Simulacric (movie set)
The first quote raises the question if reality is different than fiction. I believe that reality is what we perceive to be reality. However, we know fiction is false or imaginary but I argue that reality could be fiction but we just percieve it to be "real" and "authentic." Although, this is a confusing concept to wrap my head around, it makes me think about the Matrix video shown in class and how everything we know to be real could in all be fiction. This also connects to the reading about Disneyland and how Lyotard thought that the purpose of Disney is to present a fake world that creates a seperation between reality and fiction to make us aware that when we leave Disneyland, we know that when we go home we are in the "real world." Overall, I think this concept from last week really stood out to me and made me question reality. When I first read the readings from last week, I found it to be hard to grasp because it was so out of the norm to think about. Although it was hard to grasp at first, the more I looked back at my notes and the readings, the more I could wrap my head around perception and reality.
