Last class discussion was very interesting because it is a topic that it is extremely relatable to today's societies, and to our future. The idea of how fandoms have developed over the years is very impressive and some how scary at some times.
"In such a world, fan works can no longer be understood as simply derivative of mainstream materials but must be understood as themselves open to appropriation and reworking by the media industries." (468) Henry Jenkins.
Fandoms and such an impressive phenomenon because by devoting their passion and love for a certain thing or idea, they invite it to be part of their of who they are. I remeber when I was is middle school back in Venezuela (an all girls catholic/christina school) , all of my 60 classmates were obsessed with Justin Bieber, and he was the legit topic of discussion for the entire month before his concert. Me and other 3 girls were the only ones who really weren’t fans. The fandom got to a point where us the outsiders were always targeted really bad. This was not only in my class, but in all the school. At the end my school banned any topic about Justin Bieber and if teachers or the nuns heard girls talking about it, they would go to detention.
(SPOILER ALERT- American Horror Story Cult)
Another way of looking into fandom, one can say that Trump supporters. The fascination for Trump from some people have taken them to another toal different idea of what a real and ethical republican party stands for. An extreme example is the cult that was created in American Horror Story season 7. In this season, the main character Kai develops this strange and dilutional idea of creating a new cult out of Trump’s values: fear, hatred and sexism. Even worse, the cult got so much fandom to the point that it was to large that it began affecting the morality of their victims. As a results, then the victims began creating their own cult and fandom that began reveling in a very critical and even as dangerous and inhumane as Kai’s cult.
