What I thought was very interesting about these past two classes was the discussion of sameness, education, and with amusement we’re putting aside the painful truth. These past two classes made me come to the conclusion about a lot of thoughts I have had about the American culture. One thing I have noticed with my time here on campus is how the Rollins community of students are very much alike in many ways. They are very much alike and how they talk, what to talk about, how they dress, what vehicles they drive, and their mentality towards life. Maybe for me it is easier to point out a Rollins student because of my background: Military and cultural background of growing up in The Bronx, New York. I would say I am a very different individual compared to the average Rollins student, but will recognize that there are people I have my sort of mindset as well. The thought that came across my mind was maybe we have this idea of sameness because we want to belong to a specific group and withdraw ourselves from a group we definitely do not want to be a part of. I know for sure that as my mindset: putting myself in one particular group of people because I definitely do not want to be a part of another.
Another thing I was thinking about after classes was the idea of amusement putting aside the painful truth of things. We used amusement to cover of what’s really happening behind the scenes essentially. The example I used was when my unit has family day. We show civilians and our close family members how fun it is at our base with all the things we work with on display, but never really get to experience what it’s actually like unless they have gone through before and how dark things actually are.
