- “Ideology is profoundly unconscious”
This reading profoundly affected my thinking, as it unearthed the idea that ideology, and everything that it is linked to is profoundly and disconcertingly sub conscious.
Ideology, is not necessarily good nor bad to be fair, it is simply a schemata that exists in the realm of culture and society. Ideology can exist as a religion, as an institution, or simply as a method of consumption. What is important to note however, is the importance of critical thought in unearthing ideology.
One of the examples used in class as it pertains to ideology is the function of the classroom in perpetuating ideology. For instance, children are taught to passively receive information, as approved by the teachers, parents, and government. If students are taught history in such a way that glorifies the United States, the ideology they are taught is received at a basic level— there is not critical thought as to whether to question the information being received. Students in elementary or middle school will likely be unaware of many of the blights in United States’ history.
Ideology, to me, best functions when it is indoctrinated at a young age. At this time, children with those beliefs will grow into adults that passively accept those beliefs and further regurgitate them. This is also why consumer culture often targets children and teenagers. If “brand” loyalty is cemented in a child’s formative years, it is likely that loyalty will stretch into adulthood.
Agencies like Disney, for instance, have thoroughly capitalized on the idolatry of children to cement their brand in the collective psyche of America’s youth— this strategy has worked to ensure the continued monopoly of Disney on the children and adult entertainment industry, with virtually no pushback or questioning.
