For my pre-blog post I decided to focus on Jameson and his position on postmodernism, culture and consumerism. One of the most interesting findings from Jameson was how he views art and culture. The quote, “Depth is replaced by
surface” stood out to me a lot in this sense because in class we spoke on which one we prefered, and then connected it to famous art pieces by Van Gogh and Worhol. When we connected it to art we noticed that the painting of shoes by Van Gogh has more depth in the sense that we interpreted a story from it, the piece wanted to speak more than shoes, it wanted to speak about culture, hard-work and poverty. This was extremely powerful during this time because he was not honoring the noble, but he was honoring the poor. The Worhol piece on shoes was more surface level because it was a flat lay painting of shoes consisting of bright colors. This painting appeared to be surface level because it almost looks like an superfical advertisement.
After this we then talked about how nostagia often has a negative connotation behind it. In socictey, it is idealized that we are supposed to be living in the present, and too much time spent reminicing of the past or planning towards the future is often seen as negative because you are not "living in the moment." In class we spoke about, how what we are searching for in the present, we search for in the present and the past. This aspect of nostalgia connected with me a lot in the sense that I do feel like I am always searching for what I am missing in the past or present. Right now I am obviously not in the financial status that I would like to be in, since I am a college student. This makes me set large goals in my mind that utimatley make me reach "finanical stability/comfort" because I am lacking that right now.
