“If the triumph of communism is the worst imaginable result, the support of fascism abroad is justified as a lesser evil.” Pg. 219
I’d argue that today the media and some politicians tolerate or outright ignore domestic fascism and view anything that seems anti-capitalist (ex: communism, socialism) as the greatest threat to our country. I put socialism and communism together because even though they are both distinct economic policies and ideologies, some people view them as equally threatening or as synonyms of each other. The progressive movement, most commonly associated with Bernie Sanders, tends to be a socialist driven movement, yet some conservatives will refer to it as a communist movement. Referring to the movement as communist is supposed to automatically delegitimize the movement to the American public because the ideology perpetuated by the media and government is that any economic/ideological system that isn’t capitalist is a threat and inherently flawed. The media went nuts when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic socialist, ousted a 10-term congressman in New York. Multiple media sources have referred to Alexandra Ocasio-Cortex as “terrifying to conservatives.”
Sections of the government and media have decided that any policy or person that perpetuates socialism and communism is one of the major threats to America. Yet look at what is happening in our country socially and politically. Fascist groups and ideology are becoming increasingly more public and violent. Charlottesville, families seeking refuge being separated and put in inhumane conditions. We have a president that is supported by neo-Nazi groups because they view him as supporting their ideology. These things are covered by the media, but they are not always called out as fascism. When terrorism is committed by white men, it is rarely called terrorism. They are usually just referred to as mentally ill and questions of if they were bullied or abused are brought up first rather than if they identify with fascist ideology. Even when something is recognized as fascism, it isn’t always identified as the biggest problem we face as a country.
“If you watch the evening news this week it’s trade war, it’s children in cages. The real big story that affects everybody in America is the success of the president's tax cut package and what it has done for our economy.”
-Fox and Friends
“That deflection technique doesn’t really work when the thing your deflecting from is children in cages…They’re children. They’re in cages. Someone needs to let them out, you fucking monster!”
-John Oliver’s response
