Last class was very interesting. I believe that the concept of reality, still to this day, I believe no one really knows what reality is. Through art is the best way to represent and speak out what reality is from different perspective. When talking in class about the series of photos, I was so impressed how the US’s media is so invested in our world, to the point that it controls it. “ The media are part of the event, they are part of terror” (C 229). In comparison to my home country, Venezuela, nowadays the media does the same thing to create positive propaganda to our terrible president. When discussing about the idea and impact of Disney, the quote, “Disneyland exists in order to hide the fact that it is the ‘real’ country… Disneyland is presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real…” (393), I believe that Disney does try to hypnotize and make people forget about reality. Still, I don’t think that is bad at all. At the end, we all sometimes try to escape sometimes, and why can’t Disney be a get away for some people?
A movie that came up to my mind when we were talking about Matrix was Vanilla Sky. The movie was inspired by the Spanish film “Abre Los Ojos”, and it also consist on the idea of a virtual reality. The film consist on how the main character decides to undergo to a virtual reality designed for him after he got in a fatal car accident and lost his place in his rich societé. Just until the final minutes from the film, is when the character played by Tom Cruz realizes that he is not living in the real world and that he was the one that decided to follow the program. It is really interested to see how the idea of escaping from the truth and reality is never fully fulfilling and impossible. Our morality that we human have is always more powerful than any powerful than any virtuality. We can survive living a lie. Here I am attaching the ending part of the movie but I highly advise watching the movie :)
